PRESS RELEASE
27th November 2025 – Nuku’alofa, Tonga
The Ministry of Finance hosted the 4th Annual Business Opportunity Seminar (BOS) last Thursday 27th November 2025 at Tanoa Hotel which presented the private sector with upcoming business opportunities in World Bank projects as well as other donor funded projects in Tonga.
Tonga’s Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Dr Taniela Fusimalohi, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the vital role of partnering with the private sector to improve project delivery across Tonga. He noted that the presence of all participating agencies demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening Tonga’s development pathway and expanding opportunities for the nation.
Ms. Kilisitina Tuaimei’api, CEO of the Ministry of Finance, expressed appreciation to the World Bank for their continued partnership and guidance, noting that this event plays an important role in ensuring that development financing is effectively translated into tangible economic benefits for Tonga.
World Bank liaison officer for Tonga, Natalia Palu Latu, provided an overview of Tonga’s portfolio and noted that a key action from the Country’s Performance Portfolio Review in October is to strengthen collaboration with the private sector to achieve more effective and efficient implementation
informing and enhancing the private sector's access to business opportunities in donor-funded projects managed by different ministries. The event also served as a learning and training opportunity for interested businesses, helping them understand World Bank requirements for different projects and supporting their forward planning and preparation for upcoming bids. The training sessions covered the procurement process along with civil engineering, environmental, and social safeguards requirements. The discussions held at the seminar created a space for the private sector to raise issues and challenges they are facing, allowing implementing agencies and project management units to consider and address them.
Across Tonga’s portfolio of World Bank projects, there are upcoming business opportunities in the following projects: The Tonga Safer and Resilient Schools Project (TSRSP) under the Ministry of Education and Training. Projects under the Ministry of Health are Health Enhancement and Resiliency in Tonga (HEART) & Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation (PHIT). A new project under the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Ministry of Revenue and Customs and the Ports Authority is the Accelerating Trade Facilitation in the Pacific Project (ATFP). The Tonga Climate Resilient Transport Project (TCRTPII) is also under the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The seminar also included a presentation from Building the Climate Resilience of Children and Communities through the Education Sector (BRACE) project which is funded by the Green Climate Fund and implemented by the Ministry of Education and Training and MEIDECC.
