The Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Government of Tonga has received AUD$1m from the Government of Australia as the last tranche payment of Australia’s total contribution of AUD$5.3 million towards Area 3 of the Nuku’alofa Network Upgrade project (NNUP).

NNUP is an electrical network upgrading project implementing by Tonga Power Limited (TPL) to upgrade electrical networks both Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) within the urban areas of Tongatapu. This includes new underground service line to all premises and also provides free new connection to premises that required electrical power for the first time. NNUP demonstrates the critical importance of ensuring that our Network Infrastructure is safe, reliable and resilient for homes, communities & businesses.
"Without the active support and generous donation of The Government of Australia to Tonga’s energy sector, we could not have borne witness to the progress and developments that has come into fruition today. Not only with support to Network Infrastructure upgrades for Area 3 of NNUP but I would also like to acknowledge ongoing contributions to Outer Island Renewable Energy Project (OIREP) and the Tonga Renewable Energy project (TREP)” says Finau Moa, Acting Chief Executive Officer for TPL.
The Government of Tonga thanks the Government of Australia for their enormous and ongoing support to the energy sector and acknowledges more than 50 years of diplomatic relations and collaborations.
