DFAT Supports MEIDECC El Niño Procurement Preparedness
MEIDECC and the Tonga-Australia Support Platform (TASP) held a productive kick-off meeting on 5 October 2026 to strengthen procurement preparedness for potential El Niño impacts, the 2027 cyclone season and future emergency response needs, with support funded by the Australian Government through DFAT.
Discussions focused on priority procurement requirements, appropriate procurement methods, supplier and market options, advance supply arrangements, approval and documentation requirements, procurement risks, and coordination with the Ministry of Finance/Central Procurement Unit.
The meeting agreed on follow-up working sessions between the MEIDECC Procurement Team and the TASP Procurement Reform Adviser, beginning 6th October 2026. These sessions will further assess preparedness requirements, identify priority procurement actions and support development of a practical procurement preparedness framework.
The meeting was attended by Joseph Scheibel, TASP Governance Pillar Team Lead; Kelvin Kellie, Procurement Reform Adviser; and, from MEIDECC, Nai Tonga, Acting Head of Support Services; Kilisitina Hakaumoto, Head, Budget Division; and Uinise Lolohea Vaeatangitau, Head of Procurement.
TASP is supported by the Australian Government and implemented by DT Global.
