World Bank Alternate Executive Director Meets Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga

Nuku'alofa, Tonga – September 2026

The Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga, Mr. Tatafu Moeaki held a courtesy meeting with the World Bank Alternate Executive Director for the South-East Asia Group, Mr. Nahkafi Hassan, accompanied by Ms. Ilaisaane Lolo, Advisor to the Executive Director.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss key issues affecting Tonga's financial sector, including the economic impacts of the global crisis and the challenges that remoteness and connectivity pose for small island economies.

The discussions also highlighted the need to strengthen digital payment systems and invest in technology to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and resilience of financial services across Tonga.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of the World Bank and the National Reserve Bank of Tonga to supporting reforms that enhance financial stability.
