Japan formalized two new GGP Projects for Tonga

The Grant Contracts formalizing Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project, GGP for two new projects for the Kingdom of Tonga were signed on Friday, 24 October 2025 in Nuku’alofa. The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Finance conference room at St. George Building.

Mr. Toshiyuki Daishoji, Acting Ambassador of Japan to Tonga formalized Japan’s assistance with Lady ‘Amelia Ma’afu, Treasurer of Tupou College’s Parents and Teachers Association for the renovation of the Cooking Facility for the college, and with Mr. Sinipata Muli, Chairperson for ‘Eueiki Community Committee for a new Evacuation Centre and Community Hall.

The ceremony was also attended by Hon. Kapelieli Lanumata, Minister of Trade and Economic Development, Rev. Dr. Ungatea Kata, President of the Free Wesleyan Church Schools, Mrs. Kilisitina Tuaimei’api, CEO for Ministry of Finance, and Contractors of both the recipient Projects.

As Mrs. Tuaimei’api’s welcoming remarks, she highlighted “Today’s ceremony is more than just a formal signing—it is a symbol of friendship, partnership, and shared commitment to improving the well-being and resilience of our community.”

“The two new Projects have different objectives based on the immediate needs of each community,” emphasized Mr. Daishoji.

Japan always prioritized education, it is our firm belief that a good school environment is significant for a student’s successful journey in education.Japan will renovate and upgrade the current cooking facility for Tupou College renewing the facilities to ensure that cooking is done in a safe and sanitized environment. The renovation of the cooking facility amounting to USD$143,800.

Mr. Daishoji also highlighted that, in recognition of the need to prepare for natural disaster, the Government of Japan will construct a new evacuation Centre and community hall for ‘Eueiki Island. The new hall will also be equipped with a kitchen, storage room and bathroom facility. The total grant amount for new community Hall is USD$116,905.

Lady ‘Amelia Ma’afu acknowledged the assistance from the Government of Japan. This vital initiative will transform our food infrastructure making it possible to provide healthier and more sustainable meals to over 1,000 students and staff at Tupou College. This upgrade facility is more than just a facility – it is a symbol of partnership, progress, and care for our young peoples wellbeing.
