The Second Ministerial Meeting between the Members of the League of Arab States and the Pacific Small Island Developing States was held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the 11th and 12th of June 2023, highlighting pertinent issues in relation to addressing the adverse effect of climate change on sea level rise, ocean acidification, building resilience to water issues, food security, diversifying energy sources, safe island infrastructure and others.

 Global partnership and timely international cooperation are critical for deeper economic engagement for prosperity, eradicating poverty in the Pacific Region, and alignment with the Blue Pacific Strategy and 2030 Agenda.

Tonga reaffirmed its commitment to the climate crisis to endure challenges and the urgency to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees through rapid, deep, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a new partner for development support for Tonga.

Tonga’s delegation was led by the Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet, Mr. Paula Ma’u, accompanied by Mr Sonata Tupou, Minister-Counsellor, Tonga Embassy, United Arab Emirates,  Ms Jeanett Vea- Permanent Representative of Tonga, United Nations,  and Ms Saane Lolo, Ministry of Finance, Tonga.
